Sketchbook

1) Silhouettes

To create my silhouettes, I used scissors to cut out the shapes from black card without drawing anything on the card. The fact that there was no drawing to follow while cutting made it more difficult to know what the shape was going to end up like, however I am pleased with the outcome of my attempt. I decided to make each of the silhouettes rather different to make them more interesting (with different face-shapes and hairstyles) and it also gave me the chance to try cutting out different kinds of shapes in the process. To add some detail, I added black frames of different shapes and sizes to all 8 silhouettes and then used a black fineliner to create a lace-like pattern within the frames to give them a rather vintage look.

2) Overheard Conversation
To draw my overheard conversation, I used a black calligraphy pen. I also lightly drew guides in pencil to help me align the text. I wanted to draw the text in parallel blocks and write the text so that they densely filled up the blocks. However, I did not line up all of the text like I'd wanted to and so I did not fill up all of the space I wanted to fill (like for example, next to the word "cool"). To fill in the gap at the bottom, I added the pictures of the penguin and surrounded it with snow.

3) Patterned Face
I found the photo of a celebrity's face in a magazine and used a purple fineliner to draw the pattern. I did not have a plan for the pattern. I began by drawing out from the eye and worked my way around it. I used swirled lines and geometric shapes and repeated similar rows of shapes to create the overall pattern.

4) Contour Drawings of a Pet
I used black biro to draw the two pages of my dog. I am fairly happy with the outcome of the two drawings but I do not think I used the contouring technique effectively.

5) Contour Drawings of a Food Packaging
I used a black biro to draw the bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup. I am quite happy with the outcome of this drawing because I think I used the contouring technique much better on this page compared to the pages of pet drawings. I made a couple of mistakes while drawing the outline of the bottle of which I left visible on the page.

6) Contour Drawings of a Classroom
I drew this contour piece using a fine biro pen, using one of my classrooms as the subject.

7) Contour Drawings of Old Shoes
I used a fine biro pen for these contour drawings, using a real life subject to copy from - an old pair of shoes. I am very happy with the outcome of this contour piece as I feel that I managed to use it effectively so that I got in the wrinkles and battered marks on the shoes.

8) Song Lyrics
I drew these pages in fineliner, using lyrics the song Only Love. I made sure to use a range of my own hand-written fonts ensuring to fill in the gaps in between the words.

9) Bugs in a Photo Booth
I used fine biro pen for these photo strips. I did three strips with three different bugs making each pane continue on from the last.

10) My Own Sketch
This is a sketch I did in pencil, inspired by some of the landscape design in Lord of the Rings.
